Overview
The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. While it is becoming more popular among climbers, it still sees fewer crowds compared to other routes. This route offers a more gradual ascent than others on the mountain, making it an ideal option for those seeking an alternative to the Marangu route, a more remote hike, or for climbing during the rainy season (as the north side receives less precipitation). The 6-day itinerary is best suited for experienced or moderate climbers, as it allows less time for acclimatization.
What to Expect
Considered one of the easier routes, the Rongai climb is steady and gradual. It’s perfect for trekkers with limited time who want to complete the climb in fewer days. Expect to begin your trek through a true wilderness area, heading towards the jagged Mawenzi Peak. From there, you’ll cross the barren desert saddle before ascending the eastern crater wall of Kibo.
