The Kilimanjaro Climb – Machame Route (6 Days), famously known as the “Whiskey” route, is the premier choice for adventure seekers. Renowned for its breathtaking scenic beauty, the Machame Route offers a more challenging trek due to its steeper terrains. With its condensed 6-day itinerary, it is best suited for active climbers with prior hiking or high-altitude backpacking experience joining our 2027 group departure.

What to Expect

Your expedition is led by expert mountain guides with extensive safety records on Kilimanjaro, supported by a professional crew of porters and cooks.
Traverse diverse ecosystems ranging from lush Afromontane rainforests to the alpine heath zone filled with golden everlasting flowers (helichrysum) and giant lobelias, culminating in arctic glacial valleys.

Tour Plan

Arrival Day: (July 25, 2027) - Transfer from Airport to Moshi
You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. Meet our lead trekking expert for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing and equipment check before resting for the night.


Day 1: (July 26, 2027) - Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Distance: 11 km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,350 ft
Habitat: Rain Forest
Depart Moshi for Machame Gate. After park registration and permit formalities, begin trekking through the dense tropical rainforest until you arrive at Machame Camp.
Day 2: (July 27, 2027) - Machame Camp to Shira Cave Camp
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Elevation: 9,350 ft to 12,500 ft
Habitat: Heath
A shorter but steeper climb leaves the forest behind. Ascend through moorlands with panoramic views of Kibo peak and Mount Meru, encountering unique alpine vegetation like Senecio kilimanjari.
Day 3: (July 28, 2027) - Shira Cave Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft down to 13,044 ft
Vegetation: Alpine Desert
Trek across high moorlands past the imposing Lava Tower (4,600m). Following the golden mountaineering rule of "walk high, sleep low," descend to Barranco Camp for ideal acclimatization.
Day 4: (July 29, 2027) - Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Distance: 9 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 8–10 hours
Elevation: 13,044 ft to 15,331 ft
Vegetation: Alpine Desert
Traverse the imposing Barranco Wall and cross desolate scree slopes up to Barafu Camp. Enjoy an early dinner and rest to prepare for the midnight summit push.
Day 5: (July 30, 2027) - Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp
Distance: 5 km ascent / 7 km descent
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours ascent, 2–4 hours descent
Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft down to 12,434 ft
Vegetation: Arctic to Heath
Begin your midnight ascent up steep volcanic scree to reach Stella Point on the crater rim by sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the roof of Africa. Descend back via Stella Point and Barafu Camp for breakfast before continuing down to Millennium Camp.
Day 6: (July 31, 2027) - Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate
Distance: 12 km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Elevation: 12,434 ft to 5,380 ft
Vegetation: Rain Forest
A scenic final descent through the lush rainforest leads to Mweka Gate where you receive your official summit certificates. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for celebrations and well-earned relaxation.
